Tile and plumbing fixtures are selected early because layout depends on them. A shower niche, a bench, a curbless entry and a linear drain all have to be decided before framing, not after.

The part you will never see

Almost everything that determines whether a bathroom lasts is buried: the slope of the pan, the substrate under the tile, how the waterproofing membrane is lapped and sealed at corners and penetrations, and whether the room can actually exhaust the moisture it produces.

Failures here do not show up at handoff. They show up years later as a stain on a ceiling below or grout that will not stay clean. Wet areas get built to the specification of the waterproofing system in use and inspected before any tile goes on, and ventilation is sized and ducted to the outside rather than into an attic.

Aging in place and accessible layouts

A curbless shower, a wider door, blocking in the walls for future grab bars and a bench placed where it is actually usable are straightforward to build when they are part of the plan from the start, and expensive to add later.
